Abstract

Anxiety is an unpleasant emotional state that arises from internal or external pressures affecting an individual's physical and psychological conditions. In the context of sports, anxiety can reduce focus, self-confidence, and athlete performance, including in the sport of pétanque, which requires high concentration, composure, and teamwork. This study aims to analyze the anxiety level of pétanque athletes at Gorontalo State University (UNG) and the factors influencing it, such as social, informational, and instrumental support. This research employed a descriptive qualitative approach using purposive sampling, involving students from the Sports Coaching Education (PKO) Study Program who took the Mental Health course and participated in pétanque activities. Data were collected using the Depression Anxiety Stress Scale (DASS) developed by Lovibond & Lovibond (1995) and analyzed to identify the level of anxiety and the social support received by the athletes. The results showed that the anxiety level of pétanque athletes at UNG was high, with an average score of 3.02 or 60.47% (categorized as “Very Low”). The main factors causing anxiety included low informational support from coaches and teammates, as well as suboptimal social and psychological support. Meanwhile, instrumental support was in the “Moderate” category (3.28 or 65.6%), indicating that physical assistance and training facilities were available but not yet optimal. Overall, the findings emphasize that social, informational, and instrumental support play a crucial role in reducing anxiety levels and improving the performance of pétanque athletes at UNG.
