Abstract

For reading to be successful, motivation plays a crucial role. Motivation is just as vital as attitudes in the decision to read, acting as a foundational element in developing reading proficiency and a prerequisite to engaging in reading. This study focused on the investigation of reading motivation factors among university students in Indonesia, utilizing the revised MREQ questionnaires by Wang and Guthrie (2004). Using quantitative method with descriptive analysis design to interpret the data. These findings highlight the need for a multifaceted approach to fostering reading motivation among university students. Educators should consider balancing extrinsic motivators like grades and recognition with strategies to cultivate intrinsic interest in reading. Future research could explore how these motivational factors interact with cultural contexts and specific academic disciplines, potentially leading to more tailored approaches for promoting reading motivation in higher education settings.
